The Sweetest Hours : Love Stories...of a Kind, Laura Pedersen
The Sweetest Hours : Love Stories...of a Kind

Laura Pedersen
Genre: Short Stories
Editor: Amber Stults

The unifying theme of Laura Pedersen’s short story collection The Sweetest Hours is love. Usually the word conjures images associated with romantic love. Pedersen sets out to explore many forms of this powerful emotion in her twelve stories.

Short Takes: Brief Encounters with Contemporary Nonfiction, Judith Kitchen
Short Takes: Brief Encounters with Contemporary Nonfiction

Judith Kitchen
Genre: Non-Fiction
Editor: Geoff Semonian

The cliché is “We don’t have as much time as we used to”. Regardless of the cliché’s veracity, people are writing short poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. SHORT TAKES is a collection of the latter: short, creative non-fiction.

Revenge of the Paste Eaters, Cheryl Peck

Hello, It's Me, Wendy Markham
Hello, It's Me

Wendy Markham
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Editor: M.E. Wood

Annie Harlowe and her two children, Milo and Trixie have just survived one of the most difficult years of their lives. Their first year without Andre, adoring husband and father. It's been tough both emotionally and financially. Annie barely makes a living baking cookies, making seashell paper weights and working occasionally as a fill-in waitress for her friend Merlin's posh catering business in Long Island.

Seduced by the Night, Robin T. Popp
Seduced by the Night

Robin T. Popp
Genre: Supernatural Romance
Editor: Keith May

Robin Popp has done it again. A solid read from start to finish. The excitement begins practically from page one and it never lets up. But there are a few pauses along the way, as the author is aware that the reader must be allowed to breathe every now and again! And, thankfully, it is not a rehash of book one. The main characters from “Out of the Night” continue to appear in this novel, but they are not the main characters here.

Three Weeks Last Spring, Victoria Howard
Three Weeks Last Spring

Victoria Howard
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Editor: Gina Kaysen Fernandes

Skye Dunbar desperately needs a vacation. The highly ambitious computer programmer is hoping the seclusion of an island in the Pacific Northwest will help bring closure to a painful breakup. The London native rents a small cabin in the picturesque San Juan Islands of Washington State where she plans to relax, reflect and get her life back on track. But a mysterious stranger suddenly turns Skye’s holiday plans upside down. A local fisherman with a seductive smile may be exactly what Skye needs to get over her disastrous relationship with Michael.

Hippo! No, Rhino, Jeff Newman
Hippo! No, Rhino

Jeff Newman
Genre: Children's/Young Adult
Editor: Daniel Ausema

HIPPO! NO, RHINO! is not a typical children’s book. Usually, no matter how important and fun the pictures are to a picture book, part of the enjoyment is in the playful text, the sounds of the words, the rhythm of reading.

Denise's Mold, Katrina Martin Davenport
Denise's Mold

Katrina Martin Davenport
Genre: Children's/Young Adult
Editor: Monica Poling

I have a certain fondness for nerdy young girls who find exploring the world around them more interesting than fashion magazines

The Door Within

Wayne Thomas Batson
Genre: Children's/Young Adult
Editor: Barb Radmore

“Adventures are funny things.
They may creep out of holes,
Appear down a seldom
Trodden path,
Fall out of a tree, or even
Arrive in an envelope,
But they always start
the same way.

Beginner's Greek, James Collins
Beginner's Greek

James Collins
Genre: General Fiction
Editor: Monica Poling

As a frequent traveler, I read the blurb for BEGINNER’s GREEK with interest. Seems that Peter, the lead character, has always fantasized that his dream woman will one day sit in the empty seat beside him on a flight to somewhere. And that’s exactly what happens. However, rather than being the “happily ever after” part of this romantic comedy, that’s the place the story begins.

The Bird Woman, Kerry Hardie
The Bird Woman

Kerry Hardie
Genre: General Fiction
Editor: Amber Stults

From the moment I picked up The Bird Woman I found it difficult to put down. The tale of Ellen McKinnon begins in 2001 and includes flashbacks to various points in her life. For some authors flashbacks can be difficult to handle, but Kerry Hardie uses them expertly. They seamlessly flow into one another without jarring the reader out of the moment.

Love and Country, Christina Adam
Love and Country

Christina Adam
Genre: General Fiction
Editor: Kirsten Poling

In a review on the jacket cover, Love and Country is billed as a classic novel of the west. I guess that is what appealed to me as a reader, since I am currently a reacquainting myself with my childhood love of all things horses and riding.

Palindrome Hannah, Michael Bailey
Palindrome Hannah

Michael Bailey
Genre: Horror
Editor: Keith May

Michael Bailey's "Palindrome Hannah" is in some ways a good book, in other ways a great book, and in another way a frustrating book. Frustrating in the sense that you wish he'd tell you more, but you're glad he's ultimately left some answers to your own imagination,

The Pink Room, Mark LaFlamme
The Pink Room

Mark LaFlamme
Genre: Horror
Editor: Daniel Ausema

A successful horror-fiction writer moves into the strange house of an eminent physicist who apparently went crazy with the death of his daughter. The writer, Jonathan Cain, is equally grieving (for his wife), and his own story soon follows the path of the late physicist.

The Shadowlands, Michael S. McGowan
The Shadowlands

Michael S. McGowan
Genre: Horror
Editor: David Stewart

Vampire-human relations are often the setting for dark fiction novels. Sometimes the plot revolving around this concept works, at other times it fails horribly. In THE SHADOWLANDS, Michael S. McGowan portrays a city of humans and vampires that exist in relative peace and harmony. The vampires adhere to a strict code of non-violence towards the humans, and the humans don’t even know the vampires are around, at least most of the human don’t.

Finnegan's Parish & Other Stories, John Dahlgren
Finnegan's Parish & Other Stories

John Dahlgren
Genre: Humor/Satire
Editor: Paula Small

From start to finish, I never stopped laughing or gasping as I turned each page of John Dahlgren’s FINNEGAN’S PARISH & OTHER STORIES. Dahlgren’s short stories, four of them in total, carried me through history and time without losing me along the way.

Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress

A face says so much about the struggles and emotions of being human. Even when that face is on a monkey. Monkey Portraits is a stunning collection of photographs that illustrate this.

Guardians of the Dawn: Tales of the Tiberian War, Nick Capo
Guardians of the Dawn: Tales of the Tiberian War

Nick Capo
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy
Editor: Keith May

Nick Capo's "Guardians of the Dawn" is quite good, and left me begging, wishing, hoping, and yearning for more! It is a series of short stories that delves into the characters of a vast world in turmoil.

Warrior and Witch, Marie Brennan
Warrior and Witch

Marie Brennan
Genre: Science Fiction
Editor: Daniel Ausema

The world of witches and Hunters is in upheaval after a witch shows that much of their traditions are built on false beliefs. In the past, when a witch was born, there were two children, one of whom was considered soulless, the other a witch. If the soulless one survived, then the witch would have to hunt out and kill her doppleganger when she came of age.

Waking God, Philip Harris, Brian Doe
Waking God

Philip Harris, Brian Doe
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy
Editor: Daniel Ausema

WAKING GOD is not an easy book to pin down in a couple of words. It’s a thriller, but doesn’t seem quite comfortable in that category. It’s definitely a religious book, but not of any of the established religions, and in fact quite opposed to them. It’s likely to appeal to many of the Da Vinci Code fans, but it’s not a copycat.

The Terror, Dan Simmons
The Terror

Dan Simmons
Genre: Suspense
Editor: Dennis Higgs

The lives of early Arctic Explorers must have been a mix of extreme boredom and outright panic. This must have been especially true of those in search of the elusive Northwest Passage when they would spend long winters trapped in the pack ice, hoping to survive until summer thaw while knowing their ships could be broken apart by the shifting ice.

Cape Perdido, Marcia Muller
Cape Perdido

Marcia Muller
Genre: Mystery/Suspense
Editor: Kirsten Poling

Cape Perdido is a mystery set in a small town in Northern California. The story revolves around the local reactions to an environmental issue, and the lives of the people that are involved. It seems that a North Carolina corporation has decided that it would be a good idea to use a pipe and massive water bags offshore to siphon up the pristine waters of the Perdido River and float it down to Southern California.
