|
|
I recently stumbled upon a quiz posted by author JA Konrath on his blog, as to whether you're a hack or a writer. One of the questions:
| Quote: | | Would you rather have a bestseller that is critically panned, or a poor seller that is critically praised? |
The whole quiz can be found at: http://jakonrath.blogspot.com/2006/01/are-you-hack-quiz.html
This whole thread started as conversation between Konrath and one of my favorite authors (and teachers) Rob Roberge. The conversation started as a discussion about building suspense in fiction, then sort of evolved into a debate about selling books, and wheter selling a lot of them makes you a "good" author.
The thread is an interesting read, but I'm most specifically interested in knowing if OnceWritten.com readers would rather be commercially successful or critically successful. _________________ Write, write, write, right?

I'd love to have a book published but not because I want to make money out of it. I'd just like my work to be read, that's the only reason.
I want to go into a career with horses to earn my living, writing is just my hobby and I love having people read and tell me what they think of my work.

I write because I enjoy doing it. I write my stories for myself and although I would like to publish and make money, it is always second in my mind.
My ultimate goal would be to make enough money so that I could pay the mortgage. If I could do this I would leave work to write full time. (So many ideas, not enough time to write.)

I'm with you NISCI. I would love to make money out of my reality. But because I know just how hard it is to make money at writing, I tend to focus on the things that I know will make me money, and let my writing just be something I do for pleasure. (Or therapy.)

My ego wants everyone on the planet to read my books. But I wouldn't be too upset if I had Rowling's income.
I openly admit my writing is pure pulp, but it's fun, good pulp. I'm not trying to be one of the greats, nor do I pretend to aspire to that. I just want to write wholesome, good reads that people will want to pick up.
And pay for of course. ::snicker snicker:: _________________ Some people say that writing Fantasy is escapism. Sure. But real life never really escapes. No matter how odd my worlds are, my life experiences inexorably end up woven into them. That's like escaping, yes, but with a cellmate chained to your leg. |

Hey Simon--
That's the best way to go about it. You should totally write because you love it, not because you expect to make any money from it. You might make money one day (you might not, though) so you should always do it because you love it.
