Two months before he died of cancer, renowned literary critic Anatole Broyard called his grown son and daughter to his side, intending to reveal a secret he'd kept all their lives and most of his own: he was black. Born in the French Quarter in 1920, Anatole began to conceal his racial identity after the family moved from New Orleans to the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn and his parents resorted to "passing" in order to get work. From his bohemian days in the cafés of Greenwich Village in the 1940s to his ascension in the ranks of the literary elite, he continued to maintain the façade.

Contest Deadline:
All submissions must be received by midnight, September 30, 2007 PST.

The winning entry will be notified by October 7, 2007. The winner may designate any person or mailing address to receive the winning prize, however OnceWritten.com will only communicate with the exact email address entered above. No forwarding information or alternate emails will be accepted.

Number of Winning Entries:
OnceWritten.com will select five random winner(s) from all the correctly completed entries received.

Multiple Entries:
Only one entry per person per month is required. You may enter more than once, but only your most recent entry will be accepted for the contest.

Location:
Only winners from CANADA (excluding Quebec) and the UNITED STATES are eligible to enter this contest.
