WILFRED: The Devil's Disciple

Edward T. Duranty
Author House, March 2007
Fantasy

Wilfred is born to a prostitute in a shanty town on Lake Red, Minnesota. He is possessed with evil powers and starts using them at a very young age. He is initially taken into the home of Todd and Janice Ingram. Nearing death, the couple leave Wilfred on the doorstep of a convent in the nearby town of Whitefield. He becomes the ward of two Catholic nuns, Sister Agnes and Sister Irene. Wilfred is eventually adopted and becomes part of the Sorenson family. Shortly after the adoption, however, there is a fire in the house. Mr. Sorenson perishes, and Mrs. Sorenson has a nervous breakdown and has to be institutionalized. The local constable finds the baby on the front lawn and takes him into his custody until he can take him to the proper authorities in Duluth. On the road he collides with a milk truck and is killed. The baby is found lying on the road grinning and playing with his wooden toy. The baby is returned to the convent and lives there for the next five years. When another constable in town is murdered, the town citizens cast blame on the evil baby and the two nuns. The three are barely able to escape an unruly mob and make their way to St. James Parish in Duluth. After a short time there Wilfred is sent to an orphanage in Albany, N.Y.

Wilfred lasts one day at the orphanage before he runs away, leaving three other orphans and one Catholic brother dead. Father John Tobin is closing in on the evil child and orders the sheriff to kill him if he is found. A fast-paced and exciting read that plays out the age-old battle of good against evil.
