Warren Adler on Getting Published
December 10, 2007
I was over forty and still burned with the hope that I would realize my dream of becoming a career novelist. At the time, I owned an advertising agency in Washington D.C., which I had founded to support my growing family. A man walked into my office who had written a non-fiction book THE MORAL SOCIETY. He asked what we would charge to promote his book. In a eureka moment, I said our fee would be if his publisher, a small one in Philadelphia, would publish my first novel. I submitted my novel and the publisher agreed. My thirtieth book, FUNNY BOYS, will be published this spring by Overlook Press. The man who wrote THE MORAL SOCIETY became my lifelong friend. After all, he changed my life and was the spark that fulfilled my dream. I never doubted my writing talent, but without that eureka moment, I doubt if my writing career would ever have been launched. Until that man walked into my office and re-ignited my hopes, I had trouble securing an agent and was quite discouraged. Everyone needs a little victory at just the right moment.
