A Bed of Salt
Blue Mc Donnell
Santa Monica, California
A Bed of Salt
By the time I came 'round to feeling pain
Moonlight had flooded the room.
Vomit hung in the back of my throat
Remnants of last night's doom.
My eyes could only think to bleed as
The world came into view.
Reality shook my pallid hand and said,
"Hey, Babe, I've come back to haunt you".
I turned my Head aside in search
Of some miraculous escape,
But there was no hope upon which to grasp
Except one pill I had been remiss to take.
It lay beside my unused pillow
Too small to shoulder such fate
Yet, it was the only link between
My hell and heaven's locked gate.
My body was stiff as though entombed
On a dried up lake of salt.
I blamed you for everything that was
For I could not meet my own fault.
My eyes closed shut in desperate yearn
That sleep should come my way
Yet, neither incubus nor succubus
Answered invitation to come out to play.
The sun continued to rise outside
I spat at it's rich optimism
How could darkness have failed me so cruelly?
When I needed it most to imprison
The lonely pill resisted not as I
Laid it upon my tongue.
And, from far away some eulogy spoke
Of the shames of someone so young.
It melted too fast like the mendicants Eucharist
Neither sweet nor sour to taste
I swallowed hard to earn my bale keep
A whore in some forgotten place.
I had walked the aisle to the sacrificial altar
But the journey had never arrived
For the people and the pills that had sworn their love
Even death refused attendance at my side.
