Writing Sparks Newsletter

April 25, 2008

Greeting

My warmest greetings to you.

I can't believe it's been almost a month since I've written.

So many things have been happening that this past month has flown by. I've been so busy, I've hardly emerged from my cave. I've really been living the "when you work from home, you can work in your pajamas" dream. Starbucks is once again my best friend, as it has got me through some long nights during the past couple weeks.

First and foremost, however, I think it's important to give you all a huge, huge "Thank You." OnceWritten.com was once again listed as one of Writers Digests "Top 101 Websites for Writers" this year, making this our fourth!! consecutive appearance on that prestigious list. Writers Digest largely uses comments and information generated by the general public, so thanks to all of you who took the time to nominate us and send such glowing recommendations.

Moving forward, I'm trying to focus my energies on defining OnceWritten.com. Obviously it is a writer's resource, but really what is it that the site does? What are the features that are most popular to our users? Does the site offer information that other sites don't, does it offer unique enough content, etc., etc. In marketing-speak, I'm trying to define the website's "Unique Selling Proposition?" Plagued with questions that I can't answer, I realized the only way to figure this out is to ask the people who use the site. So, to that end, I'm introducing the first-ever OnceWritten.com survey.

And in order to encourage you to take the survey, one lucky entrant will win a $100 gift certificate at Amazon.com. (To be selected on June 15, 2008.) You do have to enter your name and email on the survey if you'd like to be entered in the sweepstakes, however, don't worry. The survey format I use doesn't match names with answers. So you enter your email and still freely say "you suck" without me knowing who said it.

So please take a second now to tell us what you think. The survey is only 10 questions long, and it will really help me define the direction of the site. The survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=jXMKoq7vilGPCcD4euLt7w_3d_3d

Another big change is coming the site via our forums. We've been using the current forum template for at least three years now and while I love the energy of the people over there, I'd like to use a more dynamic, interactive tool. I've now launched a new social network (still in beta testing) known as "The Writers Network." There are currently 16 members testing the network and now I'm asking you to come over and give it a try at www.oncewritten.ning.com. I think you'll love the photos, videos, and the ability to send each other notes and encouragement. Check it out and be sure to let me know what you think of the new format.

Other changes are also coming your way soon, including a possible web redesign, and enhanced web features. We'll have more on that in a future newsletter.

I hope things are rosy for all of you, and as always, I wish you all the very best.

Happy writing!

Monica

Publishing My First Book: Tara Yellen

Tara YellenI wrote AFTER HOURS AT THE ALMOST HOME in three days—and spent the next eight years revising it.

The novel began as my Masters thesis for the writing program at the University of Colorado—though it wasn’t my original thesis. Two months before the due date, I was working on a collection of short stories. I was also working at two bars—one an upscale martini bar, where I lied to get the job because, despite years of waiting tables, I . . .

Meet the Author: Meet the Author: J. Kelley Carlson

J. Kelley CarlsonI remember English Composition 101 well. It was there that I discovered I could write material worth reading. That might not have been so strange if I hadn’t been 41 years old at the time and had not been inside a classroom for twenty years. I owe many thanks to the school superintendent for forcing my return to school.

In 1988 the superintendent decided that the nurses working for the school system should have a four-year degree. I . . .
